    The Roma People

    By DnA | March 28, 2008

The first ever Bible for some of the Roma people of Croatia.

There are an estimated 12 million gypsies around the world with at least 8 million of them in central and eastern Europe. They are thought to have descended from a very low caste in India which migrated north during the 11th century. When they entered Europe in medieval times, people thought they had come from Egypt, and they called them “Gyptians” or “Gypsies.” This has become a name of discrimination today.

They have been a persecuted people: they were enslaved in the Balkans, and more than a half million of them were killed in the Holocaust. Almost everywhere they are harassed and mistreated. Today their education is inferior, their unemployment rate is high, and their quality of life is very low. Only a few are integrated into the society in which they live.

Some of these people, the Bayesh in Croatia, descended from slaves and have never had a book printed in their language. UNTIL NOW! “My First Bible” written for children is now being distributed throughout the country, and is being enthusiastically received. Missionaries hope to place one in every Bayesh home.

One of the most educated Bayesh in the country is an 18 year old nursing student named Natasha. She helped with the linguistics of translating “My First Bible” into the oral language of her people.
