The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like Unto a Ceiling Fan
By arnelle | August 4, 2010
It was a little warm in the meeting, so we flipped the switch for the big ceiling fan. We could hear a whine, and we knew the power was there, but no blade turned. Finally, the blades began to move so slowly that it took almost a half a minute for one rotation.
As I watched that useless movement, I was suddenly struck with how God must see us sometimes. His power is there, ready to meet the need. Our assignment is to move by His power (not our own), but we just sit there and whine. Finally, we begin to move in the appropriate direction, but so slowly that there is no good effect. And yet, we are smug in our tiny efforts that we are doing the will of God because we are moving at all. (That’s a lot more than some people are doing, right?) Our lack of effectiveness we chalk up to God’s sovereignty. (We sow, but only He can give the increase. Kinda makes it His fault, doesn’t it?) Many times those watching and hoping will just give up (like we did) and look to some other source for their needs. (At our meeting we kicked up the air conditioning.)
There is great loss in not moving when God sends the power for movement—loss to those in need around us, and loss to us. And yet, no matter how slow we are to obey, we still like to think we are His greatest fans.
