    Punta Arenas is Already There

    By DnA | March 25, 2008

Take the Gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth.

The southernmost city in the world is Punta Arenas. It stands between two oceans on a stretch of water navigated by Drake and Magellan. It is whipped by ferocious gales which make for jagged, icy mountains and stunted, hunchback trees. Punta Arenas is a former penal colony and coaling station. Today it is the center of a wool and meat industry sending fleeces to China and lamb all over the world.

Driven by strong winds, low clouds race across the sky: squalls, blue sky, a shower, then sunshine followed by hail would not be unusual. The people say, “That’s Punta Arenas: five climates every day.”

The gospel has also made its way to this ends-of-the-earth city of 110,000 people. The St. James Church has been active there since the days of the pioneers. Even without a pastor for the last year, the people have formed into home groups and continue to meet and worship and reach out to their community with the good news of Christ.
